Andromeda by Polly Outhwaite

This pattern was inspired by the Greek myth of Andromeda, chained to a rock as a sacrifice for Cetus as punishment for her mother’s vanity.  She was rescued by Perseus and married him.  When Andromeda died, Athena placed her in the sky, near Perseus.

This pattern combines the chain lace pattern with the baby cable, and is topped with beads and a picot cuff.  The pattern is written denoting instep, sole and gusset, so that it can be knitted using dpns, magic loop or 2 circs.

Sizes

Women's Medium

Yarn

Ripples Craft (75% superwashed wool, 25% nylon; 460yd [420m]/100g): color Plummy (a semi solid purple), 1 skein

Needles

US #1 (2.5 mm): DPNs, 2 circulars or magic loop (1 circ)

Gauge

Approx 8 sts = 1" in St st (lace pattern is fairly stretchy)

Notions

0.75mm crochet hook (for threading beads)
Tapestry needle for grafting
40 5.5mm glass beads

Abbreviations

Please see our standard list of abbreviations.

RT: right twist - k2tog (don't slip stitches off left needle), insert right needle into first sts on left needle and k, slip both sts of left needle.

Pattern Notes

Beading

The beading is worked so that the beads sit vertically.  The crochet hook should be small enough so that you can thread the bead though it. To add a bead, slip 1 bead through the crochet hook, slip crochet hook through loop on left needle.  Pull the loop through the bead’s aperture, slip st back to left needle.  Purl the st with the bead.

Pattern

Cuff

CO 60 sts. Join in the rnd being careful not to twist.
Work 7 rnds in St st (i.e. knit every rnd)
Next Rnd (eyelet rnd): *K2tog, yo, rep from * to end of rnd.
Work 7 rnds in St st

Next Rnd:  P
Next Rnd:  *P2, k, rep from * to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: *P2, bead 1, rep from * to end of rnd

Leg

Work lace pattern as per chart until leg is approx 6 inches from cast on row, ending with row 6 of lace pattern.

Divide heel and instep sts so that there are 32 sts for the instep and 28 sts for the heel.
Instep stitch pattern should be chain panel (8) + baby cable (4) + chain panel (8) + baby cable (4) + chain panel  (8) = 32
Heel stitch pattern should be baby cable (4)+ chain panel (8) + baby cable (4) + chain panel (8) + baby cable (4) = 28

Next Rnd: Work row 1 of lace pattern as follows: work across instep in pattern, m1 on heel, work across heel sts, m1; 62 sts (32 instep and 30 heel)

Turn work.

Heel Flap (on 30 sts)

Note: The heel flap is worked flat.

Set up Row 1 (WS)
: S1, k1, p2, k1, p across until 5 sts rem, k1, p2, k1, p1
Set up Row 2: S1, p1, rt, p1, k across until 5 sts rem, p1, rt, p1,k1

Rows 1, 3, 5:  S1, k1, p2, k1, (S1, P) 10 times, k1, p2, k1, p1
Rows 2, 4: S1, p1, k2, p1, k across until 5 sts rem, p1, k2, p1, k1
Row 6: S1, p1, rt, p1, k across until 5 sts rem, p1, rt, p1,k1

Rep Rows 1 -6 until heel is desired length (approx 2.25in).

Purl 1 row

Turn heel

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k16, k2tog tbl, k1, turn
Row 2: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 3: Sl 1, k to within 1 st of the gap, k2tog tbl, k1, turn
Row 4: Sl 1, p to within 1 st of the gap, p2tog, p1, turn
Rep rows 3 and 4 until all heels sts have been worked; 18 sts rem
Next row Sl 1, k across heel sts

Gussets

Pick up and k 18 sts along side of heel flap.
Work across instep cont in est patt.
Pick up and k 18 sts along opposite side of heel flap and k half of the heel sts.
Slip the remaining heel sts onto needle with the initial 18 gusset sts.

Foot

Rnd 1 (decrease rnd): K to last 3 sts of left gusset, k2tog, k1; work across instep sts in est patt; k1, ssk, k to end of right gusset
Rnd 2: K all sole and gusset sts and work instep in est patt

Rep these 2 rnd until 62 sts rem. Cont without decreasing until foot measures 2.5in (6.5cm) less than desired finished length, ending with Rnd 2 of chart.

Toe

Adjust end of rnd by knitting the remaining sole sts so the new end of rnd is between the end of the sole and the beginning of the instep.

There are 32 instep sts and 30 sole sts.

Set-up rounds
Rnd 1: Instep - K1, k2 tog, k across instep until last 3 sts, ssk, k1; Sole - K
Rnd 2: K across instep and sole stitches

There are now 60 sts - 30 instep and 30 sole.

Toe decreases

Rnd 1: Instep - K1, k2 tog, k across instep until 3 sts rem, ssk, k1; Sole - K1, k2 tog, k across instep until 3 sts rem, ssk, k1
Rnd 2: K across instep and sole stitches

Repeat these 2 rnds until there are 32 sts remaining (16 instep and 16 sole).

Repeat Round 1 only until there are 16 sts remaining (8 instep and 8 sole).

Finishing

Graft toe sts and weave in ends. Fold cuff under at the eyelet row to create picot edge.  Hem cast on edge to inside of sock to create picot hem.

Repeat for second sock.
