After much internal debate, I’ve decided that the Fall 2009 issue of knotions will be the final issue.
This was not a decision I came to lightly, and one that I’ve wrestled with for quite some time now. The knitting community welcomed knotions and I loved meeting so many new people throughout the past 18 months.
However, after publishing five issues I do not foresee the magazine being able to sustain a high quality of patterns on an advertising-based revenue model. Right now, a large portion of the fees are personally funded by me.
I considered several alternatives:
- Offering a mix of both free and for-purchase patterns
- Creating a subscription-based model – for example, $20/year for all patterns
- Opening ads to be issue-wide to be able to offer ads at lower rates and be more accessible to smaller companies, indie dyers, etc
After some analysis, none of these options seemed viable.
I've really enjoyed working with you all - knitters and designers - and I've gained some great learning and insight, and have made many new friends in the process. I'll never regret having started knotions but I do feel it's time to say goodbye.
The web site will remain live indefinitely. If I ever get to a point where hosting the site isn't viable I will give plenty of warning so designers and knitters can work around it.
Thank you all for your support!

I'm so sorry to hear this! If it is any help, though, I'm sure there are a lot of us who would be willing to pay $20 a year to subscribe to Knotions! Or, to donate directly. I hope you'll reconsider.

Oh man! I'm so sorry to hear this. I always looked forward to a new issue, but I agree, you have to do what's best for you and I appreciate you not putting out a lesser-quality product. I'll miss Knotions, but also hope that the closure will help you get some of your own life back so we can see you elsewhere again! I'm selfish like that ;)

I'll miss seeing new issues, but I know it's the best decision for you personally. Thanks for creating this wonderful magazine and I hope that this change will free you up to design more patterns.

Well, this is a sad day. Your magazine is so lovely, and I have always looked forward to the next issue. But if it wasn't working for you, then so be it. Thanks for ALL the work you did to let us knitting fiends enjoy some wonderful free patterns!

Thank you again for rescuing the old MagKnits patterns, and for committing to give designers advance notice if you ever decide to take your site down. I'm sad to see Knotions go, but I know you made the best decision for yourself and your venture. See you elsewhere on the web!

oh no! i'm totally saddened by this, seeing as you and i started our magazines right around the same time. i'm having trouble keeping popknits afloat as well so i totally see where you're coming from. online advertising in this economy is the pits. i wish you the best of luck in every future endeavor!

I am saddened to hear this news, but totally understand your reasoning behind the decision. Knotions would totally be worth a $20/yr subscription, IMO. I'd pay it in a heartbeat.

:( I am very saddened that it hasn't worked out for you here at Knotions. I love Knotions, and really admired the fantastic layout above all. Your build here is smart, stylish, and very user friendly. The quality of patterns offered has also been fantastic.
Please know that I wish you well in your future endeavors, and I hope that perhaps one day Knotions can become viable again in the future. You've got a good thing here, and your revenue ideas seem good to me.

What a sad announcement. Your work on this magazine has been unparalleled in my opinion and I'm very sorry to see it come to an end. I'm sure it was a difficult conclusion to come to but I certainly understand. I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see of your work in the knitting community though. I hope other magazines take note though. You've set a high bar.
Best of luck with whatever the future holds for you!

NOOO!!!! I've adored Knotions ever since I discovered it, and I'm so sad to see it stop! I wish I had a magic wand to wave to make it possible to continue, and if there is anything I, as a knitter, could do, I would! Thank you for all your hard work you put into this site. It's given me so much inspiration!
