Crochet Abbreviations

We use US standard abbreviations.

BLO – back loop only

BPdc – back post double crochet

ch – chain

Crab stitch (reverse single crochet) – is always worked on right side and in the opposite direction than usual – attach yarn as required, 1 ch, * insert hook into the next st on right if you are right-handed (left st for lefties), yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through both lps on hook; repeat from * across.

dc (double crochet) – yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) twice.

dc2tog (double crochet 2 together) – Yo hook, insert hook into stitch , pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook.  Yo hook, pull through 2 loops.  Yo hook, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook.  Yo, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook.  Yo pull through last 3 loops.  One dc2tog made, one st decreased.

dc3tog (double crochet 3 together) – Yo hook, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook.  Yo hook, pull through 2 loops.  Yo hook, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook.  Yo, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook.  Yo hook, insert hook into 3rd stitch , pull up a loop, 5 loops on hook.  Yo hook, pull through 2 loops.  Yo pull through last 4 loops.  One dc3tog made, two sts decreased.

Fdc – foundation double crochet

FPdc – front post double crochet

FPdc2tog (front post double crochet 2 together) – Yo hook, insert hook from front to back to front around the post of indicated stitch, yo, draw up a lp, 3 loops on hook.  Insert hook around next post, yo and pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook.  Yo, pull through 1 loop, 3 loops on hook.  Yo pull through 2 loops. Yo and pull through last 2 loops.  One FPdc2tog made, one st decreased.

FLO – front loop only

fo – Finish Off

HDC – half double crochet

Hdc2tog – half double crochet two stitches together. Yo hook, insert hook into stitch, yo again and pull up a loop. There are now 3 loops on your hook. Insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook. Yo and pull through last 4 loops.

lp(s) – loop(s)

NJ – needle join

sc (single crochet) – Insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, yo, pull through 2 lps.

sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) – Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop (2 lps on hook). Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop (3 lps on hook). Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

sk – skip stitch

ss (slip stitch) – insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw yarn up and pull 2nd lp through the 1st lp on hook.

sp(s) – space(s)

st(s) – stitch(es)

tr (treble crochet) – yo twice, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) 3 times.

yo – yarn over

*…; repeat from * x more times Work the instructions after *, then repeat that section a further number of times as stated
