Backward Loop Cast On: Tutorial

The backward loop cast on can be used to create additional sts in the middle of a row.

Work to the point where you want to make 1 using the backward loop cast on.

With your yarn tail, create a loop (e). The yarn closest to your work should be forming a leg at the back of the e from the lower right corner to the upper left, the yarn coming from your skein should be forming the leg on top from the upper right corner to the lower left.

Place the loop carefully on your RHN needle, making sure that the loop is caught in the right direction. Your yarn tail should be at the front leg of the e, going from the upper right corner to the lower left.

Pull the loop tight.

Your additional st has now been created.

You can repeat this as many times as the pattern calls for it. You can also use this technique to cast on additional sts e.g. underneath an armhole.

In the next round, when you come to your st created via the backward loop cast on, you can just knit it as you would knit any other st.

You might notice that the make 1 via backward loop cast on will leave a small hole in your knitting. This is completely normal, but something to keep in mind while choosing to use this technique for making your increases.
