I think this is a simple chart and it truly shows us a good picture.
Types of Colorwork Charts
There are at least 2 types of colorwork charts, and it all has to do with the shape of the box.
Some boxes are shown as a square (top) – both the height and width are the same.
The second type of box is truer to the shape of a knit stitch (bottom). The box will be wider than it is tall.
