It can be confusing to understand, but it’s important to recognize this abbreviation. RS = Right Side and that’s the public side. WS = Wrong Side and that’s the back side.
It’s also good to know that you won’t always see this and sometimes it will be up to you. In fact, I’d say that it’s often not included.
Even pieces that are reversible tend to have a RS and a WS. In that case, I’d say that it’s the *more* correct public side. So, even though you have 2 public sides, typically one side is nicer.
In general, the nicer side is the RS.
Here’s how the RS will look when you’re crocheting in the round.

When you’re working in rows (back and forth), it will switch. In some of these cases, it’ll be clear which side is “right”. In other cases, it’ll be up to you.

In both cases though, the chain at the top tilts forward just a bit – you can see them in both pics above.
