We sat down with Rachel again (here’s our first Designer Focus on her). She’s one of the people in our giveaway, so I thought you’d enjoy getting to know her a bit more.

You know how knitters always have that ONE needle size that mysteriously disappears? What’s your dye studio’s equivalent – that one tool or supply that seems to play hide and seek?
Thankfully, my dye equipment is pretty well behaved and generally stays where I put it. My knitting needles, on the other hand… if someone could tell me where all the US4 and US6 circular needles with 16 inch cables hide, I’d appreciate it!

We’ve all have that ‘eureka’ moment in dyeing where everything goes hilariously wrong but creates something amazing. What’s yours?
The “Huckleberry” colorway was born when I was planning to dye something else, but picked up the wrong container of dye powder and dropped it into the mix without checking which one I was holding. At that point it was too late to fix it, so I just went with it and came up with a new color.
Everyone talks about color inspiration, but what’s the weirdest thing that’s ever inspired one of your colorways? (And did you tell customers what it was? 😄)
“Gone Fishing” is the colorway that came out of being shown a new fishing rod that my husband just came home with, and then being asked “could you dye something that color?”, while pointing to a small section of the rod. Turns out the answer was yes, I could. I don’t think anyone has actually asked where that particular name came from, so I probably haven’t told it before.
If you could instantly master any fiber-related skill (no practice needed!), what would it be and how would it change your (knitting or dyeing) process?
Spinning. I’d love to create something all the way from fiber through to finished item, including dyeing the handspun yarn. Probably wouldn’t change my overall process much, but I like to use a variety of different fibers, and this would give me more variety.
We’ve seen your gorgeous colorways, but let’s talk disasters – what’s your most memorable ‘well, that didn’t go as planned’ dye moment?
Honestly, nothing has really gone too disastrously wrong. The occasional batch where a delicate tonal has come out all patchy because the dye only absorbed in certain areas, but really nothing too unexpected.
Quick! The Yarn Police are coming – what’s your most controversial opinion about fiber arts that you’re willing to defend?
Generally, I’m of the opinion that what works for you is the best approach, be that English/Continental knitting, metal/wood needles etc. However, I’m not a fan of brioche, whether it’s one or two color, and I know that’s a popular technique.
You’ve probably tested hundreds of color combinations – what’s the most unexpected color pairing that turned out to be a total knockout?
I just finished a colorwork hat that has my Jade colorway as the main color, and Sunflower as the contrast, which I didn’t expect to like, but I really do.
We all have that one tool that’s changed our creative game completely. What’s the most unexpectedly useful tool in your (knitting or dyeing) that you’d never want to work without?
I think you’d be surprised how little I use gadgets and tools. I like to keep things simple where I can.
