
Warm Weather Crafting
Warm weather crafting can be hard! But it doesn’t need to be impossible. Here are a few ideas to help make it easier.
- Work on smaller projects. The time for that big blanket is probably not while you’re sitting outside in July.
- Think socks, cowls, leg warmers or mittens.
- Use lighterweight fibers such as cotton and linen. It’s no cliche that these fibers are better for warm weather.
- Work on thinner projects such as lace shawls.
- Colors
- Choose colors that inspire you and keep your interest
- Or, take advantage of the longer daylight and work on that darker yarn now.
- Substitute a yarn
- Read our article on some of the things to think about when substituting a yarn. A couple things that come to mind quickly are
- Warm weather fibers tend to weigh more than cool weather fibers.
- The same gauge yarn might not behave the same way in a different fiber. Plant-based yarns tend to flatten out ribbing. Take advantage of it instead of fighting it.
- Not every wool project is suitable for a cotton/linen/hemp substitute.
- When in doubt, swatch! (you knew I’d say that, right?)

When It Gets Warmer
Whichever way you go, just please don’t stop crafting altogether. While the types of projects or crafts might change, warmer weather should mean changes and not replacement.
