Grafting Garter Stitch
There are lots of ways to graft together garter stitch! We’ll give one way if you’ll be starting with a purl stitch.
We used 2 colors just to make it easier to follow along. But, in most cases, you’ll be grafting together just 1 color.
Setup 1: The bottom just finished a knit row. The top just finished a purl row.
Setup 2: Thread yarn through darning needle. Insert needle knitwise through the bottom (pink) and pull through. Insert needle knitiwise through top (lavender) and pull through.
And after the setup is done:
You only do this step once – at the start.
Step 1: In bottom (pink), insert needle purlwise through first stitch and drop it off.
Step 2: In bottom (pink), insert needle knitwise through what’s now the first stitch. DO NOT DROP IT OFF.
Note that I do Step 1 and 2 as one big motion. I didn’t do that at first, but now I do.
Steps 3 and 4: Do the same as Steps 1 and 2, but this time do it in top (lav).
Here it is after a few stitches were done from each needle.
Repeat these 4 steps until just 1 stitch remain on each needle.
End 1: In bottom (pink), insert needle purlwise through first stitch and drop it off.
End 2: In top (pink), insert needle purlwise through first stitch and drop it off.
