A little bit of lace, some meandering cables, and some bling, all inspired by sitting on my favorite beach watching the tide come in over the sand at sunset. The sunset was sparkling on the water, and the sky was a perfect coral pink. There is no better place to be.

Pattern Notes
This scarf is worked lengthways and shaped using short rows. A cable and lace sideways border is then added, before blocking and sewing on the beads to finish.
Please note that if you wish you can make the garter st portion of the scarf deeper by adding extra repeats of the short row shaping. This will of course use more yarn, make sure you keep approx. 50% of your skein by weight to complete the border.
Scarf
Using 3.5mm CO 276 sts. Place stitch markers after the 2nd and every 17th following sts 15 times then finally work the last 2 sts. This will give you 2 sts, 16 sections of 17 sts then 2 sts.
Working back and forth in garter st work short rows as follows:
Knit to second to last marker, sl marker, sl next st turn work.
Repeat.
Continue making short rows, working to one marker less until there are only the two central markers left. Sl marker, sl next st turn work and knit to end. Work one row garter st.
I’ve chosen NOTĀ to wrap sts when working short rows in garter stitch.
Work this set of short rows twice more. Work 2 rows garter st. Do not break yarn
This is where you would work additional sections of short rows if you are wishing to make the scarf deeper
Knitted on border
CO 33 sts to the end of the row using a cable cast on.
These sts will become the working sts that you will use to create the border, you will combine one st from the body of the scarf with the last st of each RS row as shown in the chart or written version of the instructions by slipping them both knitwise and knitting them together. Continue along the scarf incorporating the body sts as you go and repeating the charted pattern 22 times in total.
When all the body sts have been incorporated bind off the remaining 32 sts
Finishing
Wet block the scarf in a curve pinning out the lace edges in waves
When completely dry un pin and sew in any ends.
With a sewing needle and thread stitch on the beads as shown in the close-up photographs. Make sure to secure any ends of the sewing thread securely to ensure that the beads do not fall off in the future.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER – JANINE LE CRAS
I learned to knit at my grandmother’s knee at the age of about 7 and knitted right through school and up until my children got to an age where they refused to wear hand knits. I started knitting again seriously, about 8 years ago after a hiatus of about 10 years. Then I discovered the online knitting community. Knitting on a small island in the middle of the English Channel can be rather lonely.
Thanks to the Internet I have rediscovered my knitting mojo, learned to spin, acquired a stash ( both yarn and fibre) bought a wheel and started designing in earnest – not necessarily in that order.
Since then I have been fortunate enough to have designs accepted by several publishers.
I have designed for Magknits, Knotions, and Yarn Forward and have had patterns published in several books including Knitting in the Sun, The Joy of Sox, and Sock Club.
I enjoy a wonderful working relationship with the Girls at the Unique Sheep and have designed several things showcasing their yarns including our ongoing series of lace shawls Mystery KALs inspired by classic childrenās books. So far we have done The Secret Garden and The Enchanted Wood , Moonfleet, Through the Looking Glass, Phoenix and the Carpet, Jungle Book, The Little Prince, The Little Mermaid, Treasure Island, Watership Down, Peter Pan, Wind in the Willows, Oliver Twist, The Snow Queen, Once and Future King and A Wrinkle in Time, Heidi, The Velteteen Rabbit and the latest is The House at Pooh Corner.
This is such a lovely scarf – thank you for sharing it! I’ve just begun the cable and lace border, and I am enjoying watching the pattern develop. What talent you have! Thank you again.
It certainly is a lovely pattern. Thank you for considering that “one size” issue. Even if someone chooses to use a different yarn, it would certainly help to have the initial size to use as a basis. I’ve mentioned this on Ravelry, but it seems there is no way to make it a blanket request to all who post there.
i added the size – i hope it’s helpful for you!
Thank you. It’s always helpful information.
Lovely design, although I will most likely use the border on a different top section. When you say , “one size,” that tells me nothing. It would help to have the actual length and depth of your finished garment so those of us who are experienced knitters can determine for ourselves whether or not we want to make adjustments for size.
I’m glad you like the design!
Good point about “one size”.
I’ll keep that in mind in the future.
