The panel of paired leaflets on the back of the hand is reminiscent of the compound leaves of the herb known as meadowsweet or “queen of the meadow” (Filipendula ulmaria). It is common in damp meadows throughout Europe, grows tall and produces conspicuous clusters of ivory flowers with a characteristic sweet scent.
Both the flowers and the green parts of the plant possess a pleasant, aromatic taste, and have been traditionally used as home fragrances or to flavor beverages and vinegar.
