These socks were inspired by the stitch pattern that looks like the winged maple seeds, called Samara, and I then searched for the perfect yarn to use to highlight the stitches. The yarn used was specially dyed with this design in mind.

1/2 LC: Sl 1 st to cn and hold to front, k2 sts, k1 st from cn.
1/2 RC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to back, k1, k2 sts from cn.
PKWK: Sl1k, insert right needle into the loop at the base of the next st on the left needle, and slip it to the right needle; insert left needle into the front of the 2 sts on the right needle and ssk.
PKWP: Sl1p, insert right needle into loop at the base of the next st on left needle, and slip it to the right needle; insert left needle into the back of the 2 sts on the right needle and p2tog.

Toe
Using Judy’s Magic Cast on, CO 12 (14, 16) sts on to each needle tip (24 (28, 32) total).
Set-up Rnd: *K2, pm, k8 (10, 12) pm, k2; rep from * on second needle.
Rnd 1 (Inc Rnd): *K to m, m1R, sm, k to m, sm, m1L, k to end; rep from * on second needle.
Rnd 2: K.
Rep Rnds 1-2 until there are 32 (36, 38) sts on each needle; 12 (13, 13) outside markers and 8 (10, 12) in the center (64 (72, 76) sts total).
Foot
Work from written directions or charts, following the chart for your size.
Rnds 1&2: K. Remove markers.
Rnds 3-6: *K1 (2, 3), sl1, k4, sl1, k1, sl1, k4, sl1, k2 (3, 3); rep from * once more, k across sts of sole needle.
Rnd 7: *K1 (2, 3), 1/2 LC, 1/2 RC, k1, 1/2 LC, 1/2 RC, k2 (3, 3); rep from * once more, k across sts of sole needle.
Rnd 8: K all sts
Rep Rnds 1-8 until sole measures 7.25 (7.5, 8)” [18.5 (19, 20.5) cm] from beg (measure the sole; the in-step may be slightly shorter); end with in-step sts.
Note: Mark the pattern row you finished with in order to continue the pattern after the heel turn is complete.
SHORT ROW HEEL
Work across sole sts.
Short Row 1 (RS): K32 (36, 38), turn.
Short Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p31 (35, 37), turn.
Short Row 3: Sl1, k30 (34, 36), turn.
Short Row 4: Sl1, p29 (33, 35), turn.
Cont to work short rows in this manner, working 1 less st before turn in each row, ending with WS Row: Sl1, p15, turn.
Turn Heel
Short Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k13, PKWK, turn.
Short Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p12, PKWP, turn.
Short Row 3: Sl1, k13, PKWK, turn.
Short Row 4: Sl1, p14, PKWP, turn.
Short Row 5: Sl1, K15, PKWK, turn.
Short Row 6: Sl1, p16, PKWP, turn.
Continue working in this manner, working one more st in each row before PKWK/PKWP; end with WS Row: Sl1, p28 (32, 34), turn.
Next Row: Sl1, k29 (33, 35), pick up loop at base of last st and k2tog with last st, turn.
Row 2: Sl1, p30 (34, 36), pick up loop at base of last st and p2tog with last st, turn.
Row 3: K across in-step sts to last st, k last st tog with loop at base of first heel st, k across heel to last st, k last st tog with loop at base of first in-step st.
Resume working in the round, working sole in St st and in-step with next row of stitch pattern until Rnd 8 has been completed, then begin working pattern around all sts on both needles.
Work leg until sock measures 6.5 (7, 7.5)” [16.5 (18, 19) cm], or 1.5″ [4 cm] less than desired height of sock, ending with Row 8.
Cuff
Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 1.5″ [4 cm]. BO using the decrease BO or your favorite stretchy BO.
Finishing
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Block and enjoy!
