Notes
- Have fun! Using two strands of worsted weight yarn throughout the project allows you to play with different shades of same yarn, achieving a better animal skin look. By all means, go for a single strand of heavier weight yarn if that is what you prefer.
- Yardage estimate for spikes : The pattern allows you to make as many spikes as you want to. It is advised to reserve about 150 yds/135m of spike color yarn to complete the project.
Pattern
Cowl Part
Using body color yarn, CO 46 (50, 52, 56, 58) sts. Place BOR marker. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Cowl Edging
Purl 3 (3, 3, 6, 6) rounds.
Cowl body
Knit 4(5,6,7,8) inches in stockinette stitch.
Decrease Rounds
Remove BOR marker. Start knitting back and forth, while decreasing on both sides.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 (RS) : K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have 38 (42, 44, 48, 50) sts remaining on the needle.
Hood
Continue knitting straight in stockinette stitch, slipping first stitch of every row purlwise wyif, until the hood measures 8(9,10,11,12) inches from the beginning of the decrease rows.
BO loosely and seam. Alternatively, use a three needle bindoff to close the hood.
Face Edging
Using spikes color yarn (held double), pick up and knit 48 (54, 60, 66, 72)sts evenly along the edge of the hood. Place BOR marker and join to knit in the round.
Purl 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) rounds. BO loosely.
Spikes
Using spikes color yarn (held double), CO 2 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Kfb, k until end.
Put a marker to indicate the right side of knitting, if that would help to keep track of RS and WS of the garter stitching.
Row 2 (WS): K
Repeat Rows 1 and 2, 7 more times; 10 sts.
BO all sts, leaving the last one on needle. DO NOT CUT YARN.
This completes one spike.
CO 1 st. Continue to work row 1 of the spike instruction above to knit the next spike.
Knit as many spikes as desired. BO.
Finishing
Place the spikes, without twisting, on the seam of the hood behind the purl edging. Use several locking stitch markers to attach the spikes to the hood. Thread a tapestry needle using body color yarn and stitch the spikes to the hood, going through the stitches at the base of the spike and the stockinette stitches of the hood. Check often to ensure correct positioning of the spikes.
Remove stitch markers. Weave in all loose ends.

What a neat idea for a hood! (especially at this time of year) I know someone who would really like this hood and is intrigued by the Dungeons & Dragons game. I really have to knit this for him! Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. Thank you for this pattern.
