Seaside Serenade by Janine Le Cras

This stole just sings out summer at the seaside to me! The lace pattern on the ends is based on a Barbara Walker stitch pattern and represents parasols on the beach. The main body of the stole is worked in an open lace called Mermaid Mesh. Ah! I can hear the seagulls singing already.

Sizes

One size 70” x 22”

Yarn

Prism Art yarns (100% wool; 1460 yds [1,335 m] / 100 g): Summer, 1 ball

Any lace weight yarn of a similar gauge will work approx 1000 yds are needed in total.

Needles

US #4 (3.5 mm): straight

Gauge

22 sts and 32 rows = 4” in St st after wet blocking.
21 sts and 26 rows = 4” in Mermaid Mesh lace after wet blocking.

Wrap 5: Slip the next 5 sts onto the right hand needle, pass the yarn across the front of the sts and around the back of them. Slip the sts back onto the left hand needle and return the yarn to the front of the work. You will now have wrapped those 5 sts completely in a loop of yarn. Slip the 5 sts back onto the right hand needle and then continue across the chart
Wrap 3: Complete as above, but only slip 3 sts
Wrap 2: Complete as above, but only slip 2 sts

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked by knitting one end and the main body of the stole before working the second end separately and grafting the two pieces together in a garter stitch transition. The lace patterns are not the easiest to knit, but the final result is well worth the effort. In the parasol lace chart the wrapping of the stitches takes place on the last purl row (row 14) of the pattern

Because of the variations in the parasol lace pattern the chart has has been color coded to make it easier to read. Be sure to read what the different colors represent.

CO 117 sts loosely.

Change to the mermaid mesh lace chart and work 12 reps across the work, remembering to keep the 3st garter st border at the edges.

Cont to work until unblocked stole measures approximately 50” from cast on , ending with Row 16. Work 4 rows garter st, decreasing 1 st in the center of the last row. Break yarn and place work on a stitch holder.

Work second end

CO 117 sts loosely.

K3, pm, work 5 reps of the parasol lace chart across the row beginning at row 1 of the chart, pm, k3
Continue working the chart as set, working the 3 sts at either edge of the stole in garter stitch until you have completed 5 vertical repeats of the chart.
Place first part of the stole back onto a needle – remember to make sure that the needle point is at the right end for grafting and that both right sides of the stole are facing the same way.
Graft the two parts of the stole together or if you really can’t face it, use a 3 needle bind off to join them together using a larger size needle and binding off loosely to ensure that there is sufficient stretch for when you block the work.

Finishing

Wet block the stole to the dimensions given above, leave to dry. Once dry, unpin and weave in any loose ends.
