Announcement
And now, the important announcement. Knotions is going to a mixed model and some patterns will be free and some will be paid.
For this issue, 3 of the patterns will be free and available online. The other 12 will be paid for and will be available as a PDF.
Why the Change?
I needed to do something in order for Knotions to be sustainable for the long-term.
I considered many different models, including the popular Patreon donation model. I quickly dismissed that because I wanted you to get something directly in return for your money.
How Will it Work?
Starting with this issue, the paid patterns will be available as individual purchases for the first 3 months (while Knotions has exclusive license for them). Then, after the 3 months, all patterns will be available for purchases as a SINGLE PDF.
What Stays the Same?
Everything else stays the same – the professional tech editing and the professional photography are the two top things you all tell me about.
And any pattern that was free on Knotions will continue to be free and available on the web – just like always.
I’m sure there will be some bumps in the road as we learn what works and what doesn’t.
I hope you join me in continuing to support Knotions. I couldn’t do this without all of you!
Last Year’s Designs
And here are a few designs from last year’s issue in case you just can’t wait!

I support your decision in having paid patterns. I have downloaded a couple of your previous patterns in the past months that I have been a member and drooled over others. One can only so much at a time. If I see a pattern that I really want to make I am willing to pay for it if it helps somenone’s business. I look forward to this shawl issue as right now I happen to be in shawl frame of mind…could maybe have something to do with being a part of a prayer shawl ministry at my church. I look forward to you future issues.
This is great to hear!
Quality is so important to me so I’m glad you see the value in them too!
I have had the benefit of Knotion’s amazing patterns for several years now, and I am delighted to pay for the high-quality patterns. Please keep doing what you are doing, and we will continue purchasing patterns – great patterns, great convenience – what’s not to love???
Wow – thank you! I’m so glad you’re loving Knotions patterns 🙂
I really admire anyone who takes the time to design and share their patterns with the public. I have enjoyed many free patterns from the Ravelry site, but have also supported many designers by purchasing their patterns. You do not have to apologize for running your business and supporting yourself. Good for you and I hope you have lots of future sales. Your patterns are wonderful. Joan
Thank you SO MUCH!
Absolutely understandable even though I’ve just found your newsletter. We all need to pay for quality work.
Welcome to Knotions – even though we *are* going through some changes.
I thank you for understanding! I really appreciate it 🙂
I’m not understanding the individual/vs single PDF? Does it mean after 3 months I’ll have to buy them all just to get what I want. Does the cost go up exponentially as well? I just don’t understand.
Sorry about that! Let me try again:
First 3 months: $5.95 for individual PDFs
After 3 months: $19.95 for all the patterns in the issue
Does that help?
So it goes from an individual pattern to a monthly “book” of patterns? Makes great sense! Any idea how many patterns/book? Because if we’re getting more than 4 patterns/book that would be a great value!
You have it correct!
And we’re thinking it will be all of them. So yes, it’s a great value 🙂
I support this! Particularly having seen firsthand what an extraordinary amount of time and effort goes into each pattern.
Good things are worth paying for. Looking forward to more partnership with Knotions! ❤️
thanks, Deepa! your support means the world to me 🙂
that’s only fair 🙂
thanks for your support!
I agree on how you will increase your revenue stream. I follow knitters who provide patterns free with ads, but I always buy the PDFs. If I can afford to buy yarn to add to my stash, I can afford to buy patterns too! When I hit the lottery I will send you big $$$! 😍
thanks 🙂
Perfectly understandable.
thanks for your support!
This is perfectly reasonable: you’ve been free for a thousand years and that’s not fair unless you have more money than you know what to do with.
I can’t see that your readers will cavil at the idea: it’s how most pattern sites work – other than those that have no free patterns at all
I very much appreciate the tutorials: even at my almost unbelievably ancient stage I learn.
🙂
Thank you so much for your comment and for understanding!
I greatly appreciate your support 🙂
That you offer excellent tutorials is well worth the price of buying a pattern once in a while. And I much prefer buying a pattern individually than using the Patreon model. Thank you for not going that route.
Thank you so much – for your attitude about the patterns, the tutorials and not going the Patreon approach. This way just seemed so much more genuine and in the spirit of allowing you to choose what your money is saying.
I completely agree! The quality of the content speaks for itself – I wouldn’t mind paying 😊 Especially to see knotions continue!
Thanks!
