Crochet ribbing isn’t as popular of a technique, but crocheters are missing out on a fun (and functional) addition to their list.
You get:
- stretch
- embellishment
- a change of pace
Most crochet ribbings are made with either post stitches or blo (back-loop only).
The title tells you exactly how this ribbing is made – using front and back post stitches.
Yarn Info
I used Berroco Vintage Sock in Fondant 12110 (light pink). I had forgotten how much I like the Vintage Line! The hand is very soft, I don’t feel that plasticy fabric that doesn’t breathe, it’s machine-washable and there are currently 50 colors available.
I’d gladly consider this yarn for a gifted pair of socks – it’s nice and soft and there’s no worry about them “mistakenly” washing it by machine.
Abbreviations
ch… chain
dc… double crochet
FP… front post
BP… back post
RS… right side
WS… wrong side
st… stitch
SM…stitch marker
beg…beginning
rnd… round
Notes
- Worked over a multiple of 4 stitches.
- Starting ch-3 does not count as a dc.
Tips
When working in rounds, avoid the incline by combining these 2 tips:
1. Work in turned rounds (at the end of the round, sl st into the 1st stitch, turn).
2. Rather than repeating Round 1 below, after the first round is established work the opposite stitch to the one you are working into (FPdc around BPdc, BPdc around FPdc).
Instructions
Ch a multiple of 4 chs.
Setup: Join, being careful not to twist and place SM. Ch 3 and dc in each ch until you reach the SM.
Rnd 1 (RS). Ch 3, [FPdc around first 2 sts, BPdc around next 2 sts] until beg of rnd. Move SM up 1 rnd.
Repeat Rnd 1 for pattern. At the end of the last round, finish off and weave ends in.

About the Instructor: Jody Richards
Jody is the founder and lead editor of Knotions. She loves poring over stitch dictionaries and trying out new stitches.
She’s also on a mission to get everyone to embrace the blocking. And, to avoid using garter stitch edges in knit swatches made for gauge.
And while she likes all things crafting (well ok, except that one thing), yarn crafts are her true love (and she has the stash to prove it).
