These are the words that my dictionary uses to define Sufficient and that I use to describe this shawlette. One skein of Unplanned Peacock Studio’s Twisty Sock is enough to knit a shawlette that is adequate to wrap around your shoulders on those short sleeve days where you need a little “something” but not a full size shawl or sweater. Not quite a triangle, not quite a crescent, this heart-shaped shawlette grows from a garter stitch tab, with all the shaping worked in plain stockinette stitch, no pesky increases in the lace work.

Pattern Notes
This pattern starts with a 3 stitch provisional cast on and garter tab (or you can just start the garter tab with a regular CO – it’s up to you!).
Increases are worked on both right and wrong side rows through St st portion of the design.
Knitters’ gauge will determine finished size and yarn usage.
Simple lace border can be completed after any row; less rows will result in a ruffle as shown in pre-blocking photo.
Shawl
Work a garter tab: CO 3 sts (or just CO 3 sts if you prefer), work 13 rows of garter (knit every row). When done with the garter, do not turn, pick up and purl 6 sts, k 3 from provisional cast on or pick up 3 sts from that first row if you did a regular CO; 12 sts. {see our garter tab tutorial}
Row 1 (RS): K3 (garter edge) yo, k3, double yarn over, k3, yo, k3 (garter edge)
Row 2 (WS): K3, yo, p to center double yarn over, p1, k1 into that st, p to last 3 sts, yo, k3
Row 3: K3, yo, k to center, double yarn over, k to last 3 sts, yo, k3.
Row 4: K3, yo, p to center double yarn over, p 1, k 1 into that st, p to last 3 sts, yo, k3
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 a total of 34 times, 35 double yarn over rows worked. (222 sts)
Following Row: K3, *yo, k 1* to center, make one by knitting into hole left by the prior row’s double yarn over *k 1, yo* to last three sts, k3 (439 sts)
Next Row: K3, p to last three sts, k3.
Lace Edge
Work chart Rows 1-25 as follows:
Odd Numbered Rows 1-25: K3, work chart 54 times across row, k 3.
Even Numbered Rows 2-24: K3, p to last three sts, knit 3.
OR, work these written instructions
Odd Rows: K3, *k1, yo, k2, cdd, k2, yo* to last 4 sts, k4.
You need to work this next row even if you followed the chart.
Row 26: K across all sts.
Bind off using the decrease bind off {see our tutorial} : K 2, return both sts to the left hand needle and k2tog tbl, *k 1, return two sts from right hand needle to left hand needle and k2tog tbl*. Pull end through final stitch and cut yarn, leaving a 9 inch tail for weaving in.
Finishing
Weave in your ends but do not clip yet! Soak your piece in cool water for at least 30 minutes and block pulling the ruffle to points between the yarn overs.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER – MARY E. ROSE
Mary learned to knit as a young child and it has had an impact on her life ever since. As a teen, when her friends were getting jobs at fast food restaurants, Mary worked at her LYS, where the hours and working conditions were much better. As with many knitters, when she couldn’t find patterns for what she wanted to knit, she started designing her own.
She currently lives in Central Ohio with her three children, who also craft. She can be found on Ravelry and her blog, or with knitting needles in hand, guarding her stash.
How can i make this shawl Larger? I love It! Just completed it.
I’m so glad you love it!
To make the shawl larger, just keep knitting the body pattern longer.
So the lace edge fits, you need to end with a (stitch count-6) that’s divisible by 8.
Thank you so much for your answer.
