I love textured items. This scarf uses Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss) and Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs) to create diagonal stripes of texture. The elongated triangle shape wraps comfortably to add a highlight to any outfit it is paired with. There are increases and decreases to shape the piece. It is a good pattern to stretch your crochet skills into the Advanced Beginner to Intermediate level.
Size
10” x 60” in cotton
Yarn Suggestions
2 skeins of Plymouth Yarn/Bristol Gallery Lyndon Hill (85% Pima Cotton, 15% Silk; 218yd/50g) color #104
Note: This piece ended up extremely soft and saggy and I needed to edge it with a crab stitch (reverse single crochet)
Blue example used 1 skein Bayly Althea Designs One of A Kind (merino/silk; 410 yds/100g)
Hooks
J (6.0mm) Tunisian crochet hook (I used a 10” length. The first row of the mitered section has 125 loops that crunch together on the hook. Feel free to use a longer or cabled hook if you prefer)
H (5.0mm) regular crochet hook
Notions
Tapestry Needle
Pattern Notes
- This pattern is written for right-handed crochet
- Some general things to remember while doing Tunisian Crochet:
- Tunisian Crochet instructions include directions for a forward and a return pass for each row.
- All work is done on the right side. Do not turn before doing the return pass.
- Some curl is natural in Tunisian crochet. If you find the piece curling tightly, increase your hook size.
- These notes refer to the work done after the Foundation Row of this pattern:
- The last stitch of each forward pass is a Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss) done by inserting the hook under both vertical bars. I termed this stitch Edge Tunisian Simple Stitch (edge tss) since this is different than the tss done throughout the rest of the pattern.
- Always skip the first vertical bar of the row; it, along with the loop that remains on the hook after the return pass, counts as the 1st stitch of the forward pass.
Increases and Decreases
- It seems counter intuitive: in the increasing section the stitch and loop count of the rows decrease. The increase in width occurs when stitches are added to start the next point. Similarly, in the decreasing section the stitch and loop count of the rows increase. The decrease in width occurs when bind off stitches are done before starting the next point.
- The center section is mitered. The miter occurs by decreasing at the center of each row by drawing the yarn through 4 loops on the return pass instead of 2. Working 2 stitches together on the ends makes it a triangular shape instead of a square.
Stitches
Please see our standard abbreviations.
Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Reverse Stitch are both worked in vertical bars
Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss) – tutorial coming soon!
Insert hook under front vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave on hook.
Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs) – tutorial coming soon!
Insert hook under back vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave it on the hook.
I find it easiest to work the trs by allowing the top edge of the piece to roll forward and work on the back when inserting the hook
Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 Together (tss2tog)
Insert hook under next 2 front vertical bars, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave on hook.
Tunisian Reverse Stitch 2 Together (trs2tog)
Insert hook under next 2 back vertical bars, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave it on the hook
Edge Tunisian Simple Stitch (edge tss) – the last stitch of the forward pass
Insert hook under both vertical bars, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave on hook
Back Bump Increase (bbi) – allows the increase to blend into the rest of the row
Insert hook into the back bump of the horizontal bars formed by the return pass, yarn over, pull up a loop and leave it on the hook
Slip Stitch bind off inserting hook as for Tunisian Reverse Stitch (trs bind off)
Skip first back vertical bar, [sl st into next back vertical bar] across
Mitered Decrease (decrease) – on the return pass, yarn over and draw through 4 loops
Top of Decrease – the loop formed after drawing through the 4 loops on the mitered decrease.

Increasing Section
NOTES:
- The count of trs or tss and lps on hook will decrease by one on each row in each group of stitches
Unless noted, all rows in this section use a standard return pass.
Foundation Row: using Tunisian crochet hook, ch31
Forward: Working in back bumps of foundation ch, insert hook from front to back through 2nd ch from hook; yo, pull lp through ch and leave on hook, [insert hook in next ch; yo, pull lp through and leave on hook] across. Total 31 lps on hook (the same number as the foundation chain).
Standard Return: yo, pull through 1 lp on hook to make a ch st; [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. The last lp remains on hook.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: MARGO BAUMAN
Margo Bauman – aka flyingflower on Ravelry – learned to crochet from her Grandmother. While she occasionally spent some time working on crochet projects while growing up, and later in college, she didn’t devote much time to it until the 2000’s. Since then, she has won a considerable number of 1st place ribbons at the St. Mary’s County Fair for her exceptional work. Her beautiful crochet pieces can be seen at the woman’s cooperative called Fuzzy Farmers Market in Leonardtown MD.
Over the past few years, Margo has created a number of original designs. Her very first pattern, Oh, Honey! Tunisian Spa Cloth, was released as a free pattern on Ravelry in March 2015. Later that year it was a Crochet Awards (aka the Flamies) Judges Nominee.
