Brioche knitting is so great! It’s a ribbing so it’s stretchy. And, because of the way the stitches are made – it’s also extra squishy and plump and it just plain feels good!
It’s truly not that hard. If you’re new to Brioche, we suggest you start with one-color knit flat. It’s the easiest of the methods and it will give you a chance to get the hang of the stitch.
Flat or In The Round?
You first need to decide on which one.
A big bonus for most people is that one-color Brioche knit Flat requires NO PURLING!
One Color Brioche
One-Color Flat
Setup (RS): *Sl1YO, knit; rep from * until end
Row 1 (WS): *BRK, Sl1YO; rep from * until end
Row 2 (RS): *Sl1YO, BRK; rep from * until end
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until end.
One-Color In The Round
Setup: *Sl1YO, knit; rep from * until end
Row 1: *BRP, Sl1YO; rep from * until end
Row 2: *Sl1YO, BRK; rep from * until end
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until end.
Two-Color Brioche
Two-Color Flat
There are a few things to keep in mind with this:
- You MUST use either circulars or DPNs. Sometimes you’ll need to slide the stitches to the other end rather than turning
- Unlike one-color (Flat), you WILL need to both knit and purl.
- You’ll be working in sets of 4 rows – 2 LC followed by 2 DC.
CO an odd number of stitches, starting and ending with LC.
Setup DS LC: *Sl1YO, p1; rep from * until 1 st rem, Sl1YO. Slide sts back to other end of needle.
Setup DS DC: *BRK, Sl1YO; rep from * until 1 st rem, BRK. Turn (like normal)
Row 1 LS LC: *Sl1YO, BRK; rep from * until 1 st rem, Sl1YO. Slide sts back to other end of needle.
Row 1 LS DC: *BRP, Sl1YO; rep from * until 1 st rem, BRP. Turn.
Row 2 DS LC: *Sl1YO, BRP; rep from * until 1 st rem, Sl1YO. Slide sts back to other end of needle.
Row 2 DS DC: *BRK, Sl1YO; rep from * until 1 st rem, BRK. Turn.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 – all 4 passes.
Two-Color In The Round
This will create work with the LC in the front and the DC in the back.
CO an even number of stitches and join for working in the round.
Setup (with DC): *Sl1YO, p1; rep from * until end.
Round 1 (with LC): *BRK, Sl1YO; rep from * until end.
Round 1 (with DC): *Sl1YO, BRP; rep from * until end.
Make sure that you bring DC yarn to the front of the needle at the beginning of each of the (with DC) rounds.
Repeat both passes of Round 1.
About the Instructor: Jody Richards
Jody is the founder and lead editor of Knotions. She loves poring over stitch dictionaries and trying out new stitches. And while she likes all things crafting (well ok, except that one thing), yarn crafts are her true love (and she has the stash to prove it).
She’s a serial starter-of-projects and has a serious problem with finishing things without a deadline.
And don’t get her talking about hand-dyed yarns. You’ve been warned.
