Short rows in garter stitch don’t need to be difficult! Give this quick tip a read through and you’ll be on your way to making beautiful short rows in garter stitch.
For this tip, I’ll be using the wrap and turn method. I think the both look great in garter stitch and they’re very easy to work! Most patterns use the wrap and turn method as well, so it’s a good one to know.
Step 1: Knit until you’re ready to wrap the stitch.
Wrap it. (read Steps 1a-1d for details on how to wrap the stitch)
Step 1a: Slip the stitch to be wrapped from the left needle to the right needle. Don’t twist it – just slip it. You might have heard this described as slipping it purlwise.
Step 1b: Move the working yarn from the back to the front.
Step 1c: Slip the stitch back to the left needle.
Step 1d: Turn the work. One stitch wrapped on the right needle.
Step 2: Knit
What to Do When You Work a Wrapped Stitch
Just work it regularly – do not attempt to pick it up.
Picking up a wrap in garter stitch actually makes the wrap more visible because the wrap and the purl bump (on the back of the stitch) are both shown.
So when you come across wrapped stitch in garter stitch do nothing.
Now how often does a tutorial tell you not to do anything?
