The long tail cast on gets a bad rep of not being stretchy enough for socks. Or people suggest casting on over 2 needles to make it stretchier.
What doesn’t work
Casting on over two needles DOES NOT WORK. It just makes a loose cast on.
What DOES work
Truth is – you need to SPACE it out more for it to be stretchier.
How to Make the Long Tail Cast On Stretchy
The easiest way I do this is to put my thumb between the last stitch on the right needle and the stitch I’m casting on. See?
And totally stretchy. Easy too.
So the next time someone says to cast on over 2 needles point them to this post.
Try this little trick whenever you use the long tail cast on. It works great for socks, hats, sweaters, cardigans or really, just about anywhere you use the cast on.
