Here are just a few of the reasons I love cowls:
Great Way to Try a New Technique
If you might want to make this great big thing, try it out in a cowl first. You know you’re attracted to the look, and making it in a cowl first gives you the chance to test drive things before committing. You only have to buy 1 or 2 skeins, and it can work up fairly quickly.
See Colors Together before Committing
Maybe you know what you want to make, but you’re not sure if you want to use color combo A or B. Test drive them in a cowl. This way, you get something usable when you’re done, and if you like it then, great! And, if not, you saved yourself all that extra time since it was just in a cowl.
Fun Way to Use a New Yarn
You might have seen this great new yarn at your LYS and you’re considering using it in your next project. Before you go crazy and buy ALL THE YARN, just pick up 1 or 2 skeins and make a fun accessory.
Great Way to Use a Different Type of Yarn/Color/Needles/Hook
This is great when you have something that you want to try. It’s a great way to use a new (whatever) before taking on a huge project using it. And, if you don’t really care for them, you just needed to suffer through that one small project.
Quick Gift
If you need to make a gift, a cowl can be a great choice! It’s relatively quick and it’s low risk. Even if it’s not exactlywhat the recipient would have chosen, they’ll likely use it anyway (and think of you every time they wear it!). And, you might even introduce them to the greatest new thing in their life. (well, maybe not quite that, but they might use something they wouldn’t have ordinarily picked).
The Humble Cowl
Next time you come across cowl patterns, make sure you think of all the things you could use them for in your crafting journey. And, we wouldn’t be Knotions unless we pointed out that our last issue was full of cowls. In fact, it was our Cowl Issue. So, check them all out with your new-found way of looking at them!
