Area of effect: a term used to describe an effect that affects multiple targets within a specified area. Take a dice and roll it as if your knitting depends on it because… it does!
Area of Effect features two kinds of cables and an eyelet panel. Each of them is defined through a dice roll which gives each sock its special random and unique look. Worked from the cuff down, Area of Effect is perfect for (semi-) solid or slightly variegated yarns.

Pattern Notes
The cable and lace panels are randomized with a dice throw.
This pattern is worked in the round from the cuff down with rounded toes and a heel flap. The ribbing and heel flap are worked in pattern.
The pattern is charted.
This pattern is written to be worked in magic-loop but can be adapted to be knitted with double pointed needles or two circular needles.
All stitches are slipped purlwise unless otherwise specified.

Cuff
CO 56 (64, 72) sts with an elastic CO. I recommend Jeny’s Stretchy Slipknot Cast-On.
Work 14 rows of the following ribbing:
S size: * P1, k1, p1, (p1, k1) 3 times, (p2, k2) twice, p2, (k1, p1) 3 times, p1, k1, p1; rep from * once more.

Leg
The first needle (ndl 1) will become the back of your sock, the second one (ndl 2) will be the front.
S size – Rnd 1: (ndl 1) K7, yo, k2tog, p2, work the Dungeon Master pattern, p2, ssk, yo, k7, (ndl 2) p1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1.
M size – Rnd 1: (ndl 1) K9, yo, k2tog, p2, work the Dungeon Master pattern, p2, ssk, yo, k9, (ndl 2) p2, work the Left Level Up pattern, p2, work the Epic Combo pattern, p2, work the Right Level Up, p2.
L size – Rnd 1: (ndl 1) K11, yo, k2tog, p2, work the Dungeon Master pattern, p2, ssk, yo, k11, (ndl 2) p1, k1, p1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1, k1, p1.
Rnd 2: Work in est patt, purling the purl sts and knitting all other sts.
Repeat these two rnds until the sock is 2” [5 cm] shorter than the desired leg height.
Heel Flap
You will be working back and forth on the back sts only (ndl 1).
S size – Row 1: Sl2, k2, (sl1, k1) 3 times, k1, (sl2, k2) twice, (sl1, k1) 3 times, k1, sl1, k1.
M size – Row 1: Sl1, k1, (sl1, k2) twice, sl1, k1, sl1, k2, (sl2, k2) twice, sl1, k1, (sl1, k2) 3 times.
L size – Row 1: Sl2, k1, sl1, k2, (sl1, k1) 4 times, k1, (sl2, k2) twice, (sl1, k1) 4 times, (k1, sl1) twice, k1.
Rnd 2: Sl1, p to end of ndl.
Repeat these two rnds a total of 14 (16, 18) times, for a total of 28 (32, 36) rnds.
Turning the heel
Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k14 (16, 18), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3 (RS): Sl1, k until 1 st before the gap, ssk over the gap, k1, turn.
Row 4 (WS): Sl1, p until 1 st before the gap, p2tog over the gap, p1, turn.
Repeat Rows 3-4 until all sts are used up. You will end on a Row 4 and 16 (18, 20) sts for the heel.
Next row: Knit all sts.
Gusset
You’re now back to working in the rnd using both needles.
Using ndl 1, pick up and knit 14 (16, 18) sts along the side edge of the heel flap (one in each slipped stitch). Pick up one extra st between the heel and the instep to prevent any gap from forming.
Using ndl 2, work as follows across instep sts:
S size: P1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1.
M size: P2, work the Left Level Up pattern, p2, work the Epic Combo pattern, p2, work the Right Level Up, p2.
L size: P1, k1, p1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1, k1, p1.
Using ndl 2, pick up one st bet the instep and the heel to prevent any gap from forming. Pick up and knit 14 (16, 18) sts along the side edge of the heel flap (one in each slipped stitch). Slip all picked-up sts to ndl 1. You should now have 46 (52, 58) sts on ndl 1.
If you prefer, you can leave those picked-up sts on ndl 2 and add a marker to mark the end of instep sts, a.k.a the start of the rnd.
Gusset decreases:
Rnd 1: sole (ndl 1) = knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; instep (ndl 2) = work as previously est
Rnd 2: sole = k1, ssk, k to end; instep = purl the purl sts and knit all other sts.
Rep these two rnds a total of 9 (10, 11) times. You should now have 56 (64, 72) sts.
Foot
S size – Rnd 1: sole = knit all sts; instep = p1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1.
M size – Rnd 1: sole = knit all sts; instep = p2, work the Left Level Up pattern, p2, work the Epic Combo pattern, p2, work the Right Level Up, p2.
L size – Rnd 1: sole = knit all sts; instep = p1, k1, p1, work the Left Level Up pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Epic Combo pattern, p1, k1, p1, work the Right Level Up, p1, k1, p1.
Rnd 2: sole = knit all sts; instep = purl the purl sts and knit all other sts.
Work as described until the sock is 2 in [5 cm] shorter than the desired foot length.
Toes
Work every decrease rnd as follows:
sole = k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts of the ndl, k2tog, k1;
S size instep = p1, ssk, k to last 3 sts of the ndl, k2tog, p1.
M size instep = p2, ssk, k to last 4 sts of the ndl, k2tog, p2.
L size instep = p1, ssk, k to last 3 sts of the ndl, k2tog, p1.
Work every plain rnd as follows: sole = k all sts; instep = p1 (2,1), k to last 1 (2,1) st(s), p1 (2,1).
Rounded Toes:
Work (1 decrease rnd, 1 plain rnd) 1 (1, 2) time(s).
Work (1 decrease rnd, 4 plain rnds) 0 (1, 1) time.
Work (1 decrease rnd, 3 plain rnds) 2 (1, 1) time(s).
Work (1 decrease rnd, 2 plain rnds) 1 (1, 1) time.
Work (1 decrease rnd, 1 plain rnd) 3 (4, 4) times.
Work decrease rnd 1 [2, 3] time(s).
Graft the remaining sts using Kitchener stitch.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Wash and wet block.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER: CHLOÉ FROM TISSERIN COQUET
Chloé comes from a family of crafters. She learnt to embroider at the age of 3 and developed a love for thread, fabric and yarn ever since. She rediscovered the joy of knitting in her studying years while she had to spend several hours on public transportation every day. She soon started designing her own patterns to play and experiment with colors and textures.
She can be found on her blog (mostly in French for now, soon in English too), on Ravelry or hiding unexpected new additions to her stash in her secret closet.
