This hat plus the San Juan Mountain Infinity Scarf
When I picture summer crocheting for accessories, I see cotton blends, and lacy patterns. In Florida, cotton blends are a must all year, and hats and scarves aren’t really worn much, unless you work in a cold office. But I do know that when I go visit my family in New Jersey for the 4th of July, outside of unexpected heat waves, the mornings and evenings are breezy and cool, and the days are just gorgeous. Being there, I can see myself sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee in hand, yarn beside me, wearing this elegant beanie featuring the beautiful, lacy v-stitch pattern.
With cotton blends in mind, I went with my go-to warm weather yarn: Berroco’s Modern Cotton, the DK version (it’s also available in worsted weight). This yarn is so soft, has a nice stretch to it, wears and machine washes beautifully, and is cool on the body. Being that it has cotton as the main fiber, it does not stretch like a 100% acrylic (or wool) yarn that you may be used to using for hats, so the actual hats are made larger than usual – diameters are about 0.75” (1.9 cm) larger.
If you substitute a 100% acrylic or wool yarn (or similar), your hat will turn out too big. A similar yarn you can use is Premier Yarn’s Cotton Fair, which is stocked at Michael’s.
Even though I designed this beanie for a warm summer, while working, I couldn’t help but picture Colorado’s gorgeous, golden Aspen tree in the fall. Incredible how a color can be so inspiring.
