Diamante is a DK weight, asymmetric, triangular garter and lace shawl that’s knit on the bias. The shawl uses the diamond lattice lace pattern.
The shawl is knit in one size, but is customizable to smaller/larger sizes by decreasing or increasing the garter and/or lace sections. Being garter-based, the shawl makes for a wonderful TV or travel knitting project. You can customize the garter section by adding stripes in one or more colors.

Special Stitches
- wrap 5 using an extra needle – K2, p1, k2, now sl these 5 sts to a third needle, wrap the yarn 3 times counter-clockwise (anticlockwise) around the 5 sts, then sl the 5 sts back to the RH needle.
- wrap 5 without using the extra needle – K2, p1, k2, *bring the yarn forward in between the needles, sl the 5 sts from the RH needle to the LH needle, pass the yarn back again in between the needles as if to wrap the sts, then sl back the wrapped sts from the LH to the RH needle; rep from * 2 more times.
Do not work the wraps too tightly – just pull the yarn snugly around the sts.
Pattern Notes
The shawl is knit by casting on a few stitches in the main color. Then, you work a narrow, long garter section and follow it with a small strip of lace knit in a contrast color. Then, a final garter border is again knit in the main color. The shawl is knit on the bias over three sections – an “aggressive/steep” bias knit garter section, the lace section and a “gradual/gentle” bias knit garter section. The asymmetric triangular shape is achieved by simple yarnover increases and knit decreases. When the requisite st count is reached, the diamond lattice lace border is knit, followed by a second garter section and finally the shawl is finished off with the Icelandic bind off. The lace pattern is both written and charted.

Shawl Instructions
Using MC, CO 6 sts.
First garter section
Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k to end. (1 st inc’d)
Row 2 (WS): K2, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, yo, k2.
Do not slip the edge stitch or knit it too tightly as that will make the edges too tight to stretch properly during blocking.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until you have 106 garter ridges or 112 sts on your needles.
Lace section
Join CC. Work the next 2 rows as follows:
Next Row (RS): K2, yo, pm, k to last 2 sts, pm, k2 (113 sts)
Next Row (WS): K2, sm, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, sm, yo, k2
Now, begin the lace pattern as follows:
Notes:
(1) On RS rows, the yo increase occurs at the beginning of the row. On the WS, the yo increase occurs at the end of the row.
(2) The lace pattern is repeated twice. Each 16-row lace rep increases the overall st count by 12 sts. You will have 125 sts at the end of the first rep and 137 sts at the end of the second rep.
(3) You can choose to repeat the lace pattern one or more additional times if you have enough yarn. Each lace repeat takes about 20g of yarn.
Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, sm, *k4, wrap 5, k3; rep from * to 1 st before m, k1, sm, k2.
Row 2 (WS): K2, sm, k1, *k3, p5, k4; rep from * to m, sm, k1, yo, k2.
Row 3: K2, yo, k2, sm, *p3, k2tog, [k1, yo] twice, k1, ssk, p2; rep from * to 1 st before m, p1, sm, k2.

Row 16: K2, sm, p1, *p5, k1, p6; rep from * to m, rm, p5, k1, p5, yo, pm, k2.
Rep rows 1-16 one more time.
Remove all markers. Continuing in CC, work the next 2 rows as follows:
Next Row (RS): K2, yo, k to end. (138 sts)
Next Row (WS): K2, k to last 2 sts, yo, k2. (139 sts)
Switch to MC and work the above two rows 1 more time (for a total of 2 times). (141 sts)
Final garter section
Continuing in MC, k the next garter section as follows:
Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k to end (1 st inc’d).
Row 2 (WS): K2, k2tog, k to 2 sts before end, yo, k2.
Rows 3, 5, 7, 9, 11: K2, yo, k to end (1 st inc’d per row).
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12: K
Rep Rows 1-12 four more times. (30 sts increased overall, so total of 171 sts on needles)
Note: You can continue to knit the garter section if you have more yarn and until you have about 10g of yarn left for the bind off and for making tassels. Of course, you may choose to omit the tassels. You need about 2g for the bind off and about 8g for making tassels.
BO all sts loosely using the Icelandic BO technique. Cut yarn and pull cut end through the last st to fasten off.
Finishing
Wet block the finished shawl stretching the garter section mildly or aggressively as you like. The first garter section has a slight curve to it given the bias knitting, so pin the left edge to its natural curve and be sure not to block it to a straight line. Stretch the lace section so the lace opens up, pinning the left edge of the lace section to a straight line and the right edge to a gradual increasing curve. When completely dry, unpin and weave in all ends. Optionally, add tassels to the shawl.
