Intricate Looking Lace Doesn’t Have to be Hard.
A Half Pi-shaped shawl is the ideal place for newer lace knitters to dip their toes into the water of lace knitting. (Or for experienced lace knitters who just want some comfort knitting.) All the shaping takes place outside of the patterning in this design which utilizes just a single type of decrease and simple yarn over increases.
Hike To Marion Falls mimics the play of the rocks and the water. The strong lines of the central double decrease give landmarks and the yarn over increases mimic water droplets as the water flows from the garter tab beginning to the simple edge.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER – MARY E. ROSE
Mary learned to knit as a young child and it has had an impact on her life ever since. As a teen, when her friends were getting jobs at fast food restaurants, Mary worked at her LYS, where the hours and working conditions were much better. As with many knitters, when she couldn’t find patterns for what she wanted to knit, she started designing her own.
She currently lives in Central Ohio with her three children, who also craft. She can be found on Ravelry and her blog, or with knitting needles in hand, guarding her stash.

I don’t understand the direction “turn work 90 degrees pick up and p 6 stitches, then pick up the 3 sts from your provisional cast on; 12 sts.” Do you know of any pictures or videos that demonstrate this?
I see what is meant by 90 degrees and putting the stitches on the left needle but what does pickup the three stitches mean? Slide to left needle?
knotions
You pick up and purl the 6 sts. So when you’re done you’ll have 9 sts on your RIGHT needle.
Then, you pick up the 3 provisional sts.
With a tab cast on, you work sts around 3 of the 4 sides. So, you have the 3 sts from the garter stitch, then the 6 sts you picked up and purled along the side, and then the final 3 come from the provisional cast on: 3 + 6 + 3 = 12
Does that help?
Louise
Yes, that’s a good description. Thank you!

perfect! good luck and let me know how it goes 🙂

Sure!
It’s a garter tab and we have a tutorial here https://knotions.com/techniques/tutorial-tab-cast/
The one difference – we don’t do a provisional CO so we just pick up those stitches regularly. But Mary prefers the provisional cast on for this. Technically, it *is* a better way to do it, but provisional CO’s can be fiddly so we don’t do it.
Do the pics in the tutorial help?

Such a lovely pattern! The pattern notes and tutorials encourage me to attempt it— my first chart-only project.
Mary E Rose
I am sure that you can do it! And, if you need any help with it, just let me know! (Comment here or in the Knotions group on Ravelry.)
Marie LaConte
There’s a Knotions group on Ravelry? I will join.
knotions
sure is! it’s here https://www.ravelry.com/groups/knotions-magazine

Gorgeous pattern. However it would be helpful if a key for the charts were included in it. It looks to be following the common chart keys, but it would be appreciated, especially if printing it out. 🙂
knotions
Totally correct! I missed uploading it but it’s there now.
Thanks for pointing that out!
Mary E Rose
Thanks so much for pointing that out…the key was supposed to be included and is now!
