Madeira Shawl

The Madeira Shawl is a fingering weight, crescent-shaped shawl featuring Old Spanish lace stitch patterns such as the Madeira Cascade and Madeira Mesh, adding some exquisite, lacy charm to the shawl. The shawl is worked bottom up, beginning with the lace border, followed by the mesh pattern and then knit into a crescent shape using short rows. The shawl is embellished with beads in the cast on and the bind off to add some glitter and sparkle to the piece.

Pattern Notes

The shawl is worked bottom up in one piece beginning with a beaded cast on, followed by the lace border and then the stockinette body. The plain stockinette section is shaped by short rows to form a crescent shape. The shawl is flanked by garter borders at either end.

Work the lace border and mesh body either from the chart or the written instructions.

Note: Use of beads is optional. You can cast on and bind off without beads.

Pre-string 125 beads onto a yarn end.

CO 249 sts using the beaded long tail cast on as follows: CO 1 st and add bead on it; CO the 2^nd st plain. Every odd st is cast on with a bead, every even st is cast on plain without the bead. Continuing in this way, your 248^th st will be a plain one and you will end with a beaded cast on for the 249^th st.

Using the chart above or the written instructions below, work rows 1-20 of the Madeira Cascade lace border 2 times. The lace border includes a 2 st garter edge at either end.

Rows 44-48:  Rep Row 43.

Row 49: K2, *k3, yo, p3tog, yo; rep from * until last 5 sts, k5.

Rows 50-54: Rep Row 49.

Rep Rows 43-54 once more.

Short-row Shaping

Row 55 (RS): K97, turn.

Row 56 (WS): P7, turn.

Row 57: K to 1 st before turning point, ssk, k5, turn.

Row 58: P to 1 st before turning point, p2tog, p5, turn.

Rep Rows 57-58 until all sts have been worked – 157 sts remain on needles; 30 sts decreased.

Finishing

Pre-string 80 beads to a yarn end. BO all sts using the beaded lace bind off technique. Weave in ends and wet block the shawl.
