“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” – Albert Camus
“Second Spring” is a fingering weight, crescent-shaped shawl featuring a leaf lace border. The shawl is worked bottom up, beginning with the lace border, and then knit into a crescent shape using short rows. The shawl is embellished with beads in the cast on and lace section, so this would be a perfect complement to an evening gown or your little black dress.

Abbreviations
Please see our standard abbreviations.
Beaded cdd – sl first st to right needle, place bead on second st, sl first st back on the left needle being careful not to twist sts, work cdd.
Note: The key is to ensure the bead sits on the second st before slipping the first two sts. Your bead should be in the front and center when you are done.
Decrease Lace Bind Off – *K2togtbl, sl the st back to left needle; rep from * to last st, break yarn and pull through to finish. Check out our tutorial on the Decrease or Lace bind off.
Pattern Notes
The shawl is worked bottom-up in one piece beginning with a beaded cast on, followed by the lace border and then the stockinette body. The plain stockinette section is shaped by short rows to form a crescent shape. The shawl is flanked by garter borders at either end. Work the lace border either from the chart or the written instructions.
Note: The lace section contains beaded sts. You can however work the lace without beads as well.
Border Chart
Work the full chart (Rows 1-28) once and then Rows 1-14.
Note: You can choose to work the full repeat or more depending on the yarn you have on hand.
Shawl Instructions
Pre-string 131 beads onto a yarn end.
CO 263 sts using the beaded long tail cast on, as follows: CO 1 st plain, CO the 2nd and add bead on it.
Every odd st is cast on without bead; every even st is cast on with a bead. Continuing in this way, your 262nd st will be a beaded one and you will end with a simple cast on for the 263rd st.
Using the chart (above) or written instructions (below), work the lace border. The lace border includes a 2 st garter edge at either end.
All even (WS) rows are simply purled between the garter edges except rows 2, 4, 16 and 18.
Bold font indicates a beaded st.
