Malhar Shawl

Malhar is an old raga in Indian classical music, which is considered so powerful that when sung, can induce rainfall. Inspired by the rains and music in my part of the world, this stole began taking shape with simple stitches and mild texture. Though light in weight the stole has wonderful drape and will be a great accessory on a spring day.

Light Fingering 3 ply -350 yards (100 gms)

30st and 4 rows = 1.5” in Hdc after blocking

dc3tog – Double crochet 3 together

picot – Ch 3, insert hook into back bar of the first chain, yo, pull through all loops on hook.

shell – Skip the next 2 sts, make 5 dcs in the next stitch. Skip the next 2 sts. No change to st cnt.

Pattern notes

The pattern is written in US terminology. The beginning ch2 is not counted as a stitch. The border is added after the stripes are done.

Shawl

Row 1: Ch 32. Hdc in 3^rd ch from hook and all chains across. (30 hdc) ch2. Turn.

Row2: Hdc in the 3^rd loop, which is behind the hdc of previous row across. Hdc across. Ch2 turn. (30 hdc).

Rows 3-4: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off or carry the yarn on the side. (Be sure to check that you have 30 sts)

Row 5: (Ch1 sc) in next 10 sts (through both loops). Ch 1 skp next st, hdc in next st, (three times) ch 1 dc in next st, (3 times), ch 1, tr (three times) ch1, dtr in last st. (3hdc, 3 dc, 3 tr,1dtr) ch 1, turn.

Row 6: Sc across. Ch2 turn with main color.

Row 7: Hdc in both loops across. Ch 2 turn.

Row 8: Hdc in loop behind back loop across.

Rows 9-10: Rep row 8.

Continue with rows 1 to 10 to desired length, ending with the main color.

Border

Row 1: Begin with main color, ch1 sc at the corner of the beginning hdc. Ch 7, sc in the 4 row of hdc, and continue until the end.

Row 2: Change color. Join with sc, ch 3, 2dc, ch 3, 2dc (shell made in the center of ch 7 loop),  *(Ch 3, sc in next st, ch 3, shell in next loop) * repeat from * to * across. Ch3 turn.

Row 3: Dc3tog, ch1, dc3tog, ch1 dc3tog in ch3 space of shell, ch 1 sc in next st, (ch 1, dc3tog, ch1, dc3tog, ch1 dc3tog) * repeat from * to * across.

Row 4:  Join with sl st on top of the dc3tog,* (ch 5, picot, ch 5, sc on top of the third dc3tog, ch 1, sc in next st until you’ve reached the next corner); repeat from *  across. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends, block and enjoy your stole.
