What happens when you stuff a cotton tube with fluffy baby alpaca? You get Miss Babs Billow—a yarn that breaks all the rules about how fiber should behave.
This isn’t your typical alpaca blend or standard cotton worsted. It’s something completely different that’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about yarn construction. We put this innovative chainette yarn through its paces to see if the unique design lives up to the hype, and honestly? The results surprised us.

Fiber Fast Facts
- Unique Construction: Billow has an innovative chainette tube design—a cotton core filled with unspun alpaca fibers—which creates exceptional softness and loft while maintaining excellent stitch definition.
- Perfect Blend: The 51% Baby Alpaca and 49% Pima Cotton combination gives you the best of both worlds—alpaca’s warmth and softness with cotton’s breathability and structure.
- Generous Yardage: At 320 yards per 100g skein, you get more length than typical worsted weight yarns, making it excellent value for larger projects.
First Impressions
- Surprisingly Light: Despite being worsted weight, the alpaca-filled chainette construction makes it feel much lighter in your hands than you’d expect from the yardage.
- Instantly Soft: The moment you touch it, that baby alpaca filling gives an immediate luxurious feel that’s noticeably different from standard cotton or wool blends.
- Intriguing Structure: The cotton tube filled with loose alpaca fibers creates a fascinating texture that’s both structured and squishy—you can actually feel the unique construction method just by handling it.

How It Feels & Knits/Crochets Up
- It’s soft because of the alpaca, but doesn’t feel too precious (I’d guess because of the cotton).
- When I first got the skein, I prepared myself for lots of shedding. And, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t sure how much I would like it. But I think Billow gives you the best of both worlds with the unusual combo of both Alpaca AND Cotton.
- I expected it to be a challenge to knit is, and I thought those long hairs would get caught in everything. But I was able to just knit and not worry about it!
- Due to its fibers (both Alpaca AND Cotton), it’s a bit firmer and doesn’t have a great deal of stretch. But if you know this up-front, you can pick the correct pattern match.
- The knitting just stayed and didn’t bias or twist at all.
Swatching & Stitch Definition
- Stockinette would be a great choice, as long as you didn’t expect great stitch definition. And I never would have paired it with cables on my own (thanks Mary Annarella!) but they worked surprisingly well!
- It held up fine to a blocking. But truthfully, I wouldn’t plan to put this yarn through the wringer.
- The yarn doesn’t try to hide its fuzziness, and whatever pattern you picked for it, should do the same.
- My skein, while hand dyed, didn’t show much color variation. I think that the hairiness would soften and color variations.
Durability & Wearability
- It feels on the delicate side of the spectrum, with the fuzziness or the alpaca.
- It’s handwash-only
- With all that fuzziness, you can’t see if there’s any pilling.
- Given the fuzziness, I would look to make items for special occasions or even statement pieces. The yarn has a flair for the dramatic.
Best Project Types
- I’d look to projects that didn’t require a lot of stretch and would also avoid being crumpled as well.
- Stick with those types of projects and you should be good.
- The hairiness would be a challenge for a newer knitting to work with, and I also think the price-point would put it out of arm’s reach.
Color, Dyeing & Availability
- It seems like Miss Babs dyes the yarn in a good variety of colors.
- As I mentioned before, I think the halo would actually hide some of the variations.
- Billow is part of their regular line.
- I don’t believe you can get it undyed.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
✔️ That fuzz really makes for a dramatic impact!
✔️ Avoid trying this yarn out as a beginner.
✔️ The alpaca makes for a soft hand, much more than a mohair.
Cons:
⚠️ Not really a con, but the fuzz-factor does make this yarn more of a specialty yarn.
⚠️ Because of this, I think it should be considered an intermediate-friendly yarn.
Final Verdict – Is It Worth Stashing?
- Crafters beyond a beginner will enjoy this yarn as a specialty or treat.
- If you’re a beginner, I’d suggest you try a more basic yarn. Your future-self will thank you for this.
- It’s more of a specialty yarn – but so beautiful and unique!
- Final rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5
Test Drive
Mary Annarella was kind enough to gift me a copy of her pattern “Life of a Knitgirl” (designed for Billow) to try
What do you think?

I surprised myself because I don’t usually use yarns like this – yarns that are fuzzy and intentionally don’t have a crisp stitch definition. But I really like this!
Here’s a close up so that you can see it with even more detail:

See what I mean? But this pattern was MADE for Billow and MADE for a STEM issue. There are several smart details in this “simple” design:
- Both ends have a neat I-Cord that’s worked with each row. It’s just part of the pattern.
- The design has several increases that are just MADE for Billow. Since it’s harder to work some maneuvers with that fuzz, she has you do them in a clever way that’s perfect for the yarn.
- The smocking (done in the middle of the motif) would be A LOT with a smoother yarn. But it’s perfect with Billow! See?

I’m so impressed with Life of a Knitgirl! Mary Annarella truly made Life of a Knitgirl work with the yarn!

Why This is a “Knotions” Review?
Unlike generic yarn reviews, this Knotions-exclusive review focuses on hands-on testing, technical details, and real-world usability, making it a must-read for serious knitters and crocheters.
About the Reviewer: Jody Richards

Jody is the founder and lead editor of Knotions. She loves poring over stitch dictionaries and trying out new stitches.
She’s also on a mission to get everyone to embrace the blocking. And, to avoid using garter stitch edges in knit swatches made for gauge.
And while she likes all things crafting (well ok, except that one thing), yarn crafts are her true love (and she has the stash to prove it).
