This cozy hat and mitts set will be perfect for spring walks and autumn days. The alpaca and wool blend yarn is lovely and soft, and the colorwork provides a double layer for extra warmth. Both hat and mitts have a stranded motif of pawprints, easy enough for a first colorwork project. They are worked in the round, so no need for sewing up afterwards. The hat and mitts come in three sizes and are quick to make, ideal for gift knitting.

Mitts
Using MC and 2.75mm (US 2) dpns, CO 48 (56, 68) sts and join to work in the rnd.
Work 20 rnds of k2 p2 rib, starting with k2 (the length can be adjusted to create a longer or shorter cuff).
Change to 3.25mm (US 3) dpns and work 1 rnd in st st, inc 2 (4, 2) sts evenly across the rnd; 50 (60, 70) sts.
Begin working from chart, reading right to left, and continue until you are ready to work the final rnd of the 4th complete pattern (you will have worked 27 rnds).
Work thumbholes (rnd 28)
Continue patterning while working the thumbholes.
Left mitt
K14 (19, 22), BO 8 (8, 10) sts, k to end.
Next rnd – K14 (19, 22), CO 8 (8, 10) sts in patt, K to end.
Right mitt
K28 (33, 38), BO 8 (8, 10) sts, k to end.
Next rnd – K28 (33, 38), CO 8 (8, 10) sts in patt, K to end.
Both mitts
Continue working from chart until you have worked 6 (7, 8) complete patts in total from end of ribbing, or 42 (49, 56) rnds.
Work 1 rnd st st, dec 2 (4, 2) sts evenly across the rnd; 48 (56, 68) sts.
Change to 2.75mm (US 2) needles and work 6 (6, 8) rnds of k2 p2 rib, starting with a k2.
BO in rib.
Work thumbs
Using 3.25mm (US 3) needles and MC, pick up and k 20 (20, 24) sts around thumbhole and join to work in the rnd.
Note: You’re picking up more sts than the amount you bound off. This is to account for the anatomy of the thumb while retaining the colorwork patterning.
Work 6 (6, 8) rnds of k2 p2 rib, starting with a k2.
BO in rib.
Finishing
Sew in yarn ends.
