This cozy hat and mitts set will be perfect for spring walks and autumn days. The alpaca and wool blend yarn is lovely and soft, and the colorwork provides a double layer for extra warmth. Both hat and mitts have a stranded motif of pawprints, easy enough for a first colorwork project. They are worked in the round, so no need for sewing up afterwards. The hat and mitts come in three sizes and are quick to make, ideal for gift knitting.
TUTORIALS FOR THIS PATTERN
The hat is sized with around 2” (5cm) of negative ease. Head sizes vary a lot, so it’s best to measure the intended wearer if you can, and select the correct size to suit them. However, the sizes roughly equate to age ranges, as follows:
Child 20” (50.5cm) circumference and 7.25” (18.5cm) height
Adult 22” (56cm) circumference and 8.25” (21cm) height
Large Adult 24” (61cm) circumference and 9.25” (23.5cm) height

Size US 2 (2.75mm) and size US 3 (3.25mm): dpns and 24” circular
Pompom maker; stitch marker; tapestry needle.
30 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10 cm] over pattern.
Please see our standard abbreviations.
The hat is worked in the round. You can use a circular needle for the hat, and then magic loop or dpns for the decrease section and the mitts.
This pattern is fairly easy to adapt. If you want to adjust the height of the hat, you can add or remove a few repeats of the pattern or work more plain rows before you start decreasing. To knit a hat with a larger or smaller circumference, simply add or subtract multiples of 10 stitches to the cast on number.
Using MC and 2.75mm (US 2) circular needle, CO 124(136,148) sts and join to work in the rnd, placing stitch marker at beg of rnd.
Work 10 rnds of k2 p2 rib, starting with k2.
Change to 3.25mm (US 3) circular needle, and work 1 rnd in st st, inc 6 (4, 2) sts evenly across the rnd; 130(140,150) sts.
Beg working from chart, reading right to left, and continue until you have worked 5 (6, 7) complete patts, or 35(42,49) rnds.
Dec for top of hat
Rnd 1: *K11 (12,13), k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd; 120 (130,140) sts
Rnd 2 (and all other even rnds): K to end
Rnd 3: *K10 (11,12), k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd; 110(120,130) sts
Rnd 5: *K9 (10,11), k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd; 100(110,120) sts
Continue dec in this way until you have worked the rnd “*K1, k2tog, rep from * to end”, changing to dpns where necessary. 20 sts
Next rnd: K2tog to end. 10 sts
Cut the yarn and draw it through the remaining 10 sts, then fasten off.
Sew in yarn ends.
Make a pompom with CC and sew to the top of the hat.
