Enjoy this new take on a top down medium-sized shawl.
With the help of a striping-effect yarn, you will see undulating lace fan out over the center of the shawl. Enveloping waves reveal color changes in an almost effortless fashion.

Rep rows 3 and 4 twice more. Work row 3 once more. 23 sts on needle.
Designer Note You will now begin working the Charted Lace Stitch Directions or the Written Lace Stitch Directions, whichever you prefer.
A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. You will not be working in the round.
After the Setup
Work rows 1-20 of Lace Chart 1 (chart or written). Then work rows 21-40 of Lace Chart 2(chart or written), six times total. Then work rows 21-30 of Lace Chart 2(chart or written) once more. 323 sts on needle. Proceed to Border instructions.
If you’re working from the chart
Be sure to work the red boxed sections one additional time you repeat the chart.
For example, the first time you work Lace Chart 2, you will work the red boxed sections once.
The second time you work Lace Chart 2, you will work the red boxed sections twice.
The third time you work Lace Chart 2, you will work the red boxed sections three times. And so on.
Border
The Border is worked the same as rows 31-40, except that even (WS) rows are worked as follows:
Rows 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 (WS): K across to center stitch, p center stitch, k to end of row (slipping markers when you get to them).
343 sts on needle.
BO Row (RS): K1, *yo from back to front (this is the opposite direction you normally would yo – it uses less yarn), k1, slip the first and second stitch over the third stitch on the right-hand needle; rep from * across, cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing
Wet-block the shawl by submerging it in luke warm water and your favorite wool wash. Leave it soaking for 10-15 minutes. Gently squeeze out the excess water and roll the shawl in towels to get as much moisture out as possible. Reshape to measurements. Allow it to air dry. Weave in all ends.

Carol Cooley
I would love to try making the above shawl after making a simpler item in the above patterned stitch such as a rectangular, flat-knitted item before embarking on the shawl. A scarf perhaps?
A simple pot holder would be fine to begin with if this is practical.
With thanks,

Awesome – thanks!
The CO is right at the beginning of the instructions, but I’m concerned that maybe it’s not visible with whatever device you’re using. Can you let me know?
