Notes
The vest is knit sideways in one piece. You will begin by casting on for the seam that runs from the wearer’s right underarm to the garment’s hem. Working sideways across the front of the vest, you will shape the armholes and v-neck as you go. Knitting continues across the back and you will then graft the remaining stitches to your original cast on. After that, you will join the shoulder seams and work the applied i-cord around all edges.
- To ensure an accurate fit, measure the child and choose a size that matches their chest rather than their age. Adjust length of body as needed, using the schematic above.
- The vest has a small amount of positive ease, to allow for a shirt or other layer underneath. Note that the garter panels at the underarm allow some stretch.
- Ensure that you check your row gauge as well as your stitch gauge. Row gauge is particularly important when knitting sideways or working in garter stitch. Adjust needle size as necessary.

Seaming
Unravel provisional cast on and return sts to needle. Beginning at the underarm, graft together cast on sts with live sts. Note that you will need to follow instructions for grafting garter stitch. Join shoulder seams using mattress stitch.
Applied i-cord edging
Using CC, work a 3-st applied i-cord edging around hem, armholes and neck. Use a provisional cast on and a grafted join at the end. For the armholes, begin at underarm and work around. For the neck, begin at the top of the right shoulder and work around {see our tutorial on working an applied I-Cord}.
Finishing
Weave in ends and block to dimensions given in schematic.
