‘Time stops at Shamli’, a short story by Ruskin Bond, is set in a nondescript town named Shamli where people lead mundane lives and time seems to drag. The protagonist impulsively decides to get down at Shamli from a train and ends up meeting his old love. It is a beautiful story told around love, life and relationships.
This shawl, with its long lace lines in constantly changing colors, increases and decreases, is also meant as a little representation of this beautiful journey called life. It uses twisted increases and decreases along with yarn overs to form a lacy fabric with interesting surface texture along the ribs.

Pattern Notes
‘Time stops at Shamli’ is a triangular shawl constructed sideways.
It starts at one tip, increases until the shawl reaches its full depth, and then decreases to the other tip.
It is easy to increase the length of the shawl by simply doing extra repeats of the increase and decrease section. However, it is a good idea to weigh your yarn beforehand and stop increasing when you are almost through half the yarn quantity.

Three Things About Your Design
- ‘Time stops at Shamli’ is designed to use one skein of fingering weight yarn.
- As a general rule, lace is formed by combining yarn-overs and decreases. This pattern uses twisted decreases along with yarn-overs, resulting in an interesting surface texture to regular lace.
- The stitch pattern allows variegated, tonal yarns to be beautifully showcased.
