I love deep, dark forests of the Pacific Northwest, with their thick undergrowth of moss and ferns.
Inspired by these thick nature “carpets” I designed this shawl, featuring interesting texture and a fun “fern” lace edge.

“Moss” Body
Ch 7.
Row 1 (RS): Sk 2 ch, sc into next ch, ms into same ch, sk1, 3 dc into next ch, sk1, 2 ms, turn. (11 sts)
Row 2 (WS): Ch1, [ms, sk1] x 2, ms into dc, dc into middle dc (mark center st), [ms, sk1] x2, ms, turn. (13 sts)
Row 3: Ch1, 2 ms, [sk1, ms] to m, 3 dc in center dc, [sk1, ms] to last 2 st, sk1, 2 ms, turn. (17 sts)
Row 4: Ch1, [ms, sk1] to 1 st bef m, 3 sc, [sk1, ms] to last st, turn.
Row 5: Ch1, 2 ms, [sk1, ms] to to m, dc in center dc, [ms, sk1] to last st, 2 ms, turn. (21 sts)

Row 1 (RS): Ch3, *3dc into next st, sk2, sc into next st, stem, sk1, sc, sk2, 3dc, ch1; rep from * to end of row, dc into last st (with 3dc), turn.
Row 2 (WS): Ch1, sc into dc, *pff into each of first 3 chains of stem, (2pff, ch1, 2pff) into sp at top of stem, pff into each of 3 ch of stem, sc into ch; rep from * to end of row, ending with sc into ch3.
Row 3: Sl into sc, sl into 5 pff, *sk ch1, ch1, sl into 3 pff, stem, sk 2pff-sc-2pff, sl into 3 pff on next leaf; rep from * to end of row.
Row 4: Ch1, *pff into each of first 3 chains of stem, (2pff, ch1, 2pff) into sp at top of stem, pff into each of 3 ch of stem, sc into ch; rep from * to end of row, ending with sc into ch3.
Rep Rows 3 & 4 twice more.
Finishing
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail. Weave in ends. Wash and block to measurements.
