As a teenager I was spellbound by J.R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. I would stay up late learning to read and write dwarvish runes and Elvish words. Inspired by the dwarvish alphabet Tolkien created, these mitts are an engaging knit with visually striking, but intuitive cables. They are constructed using a scrap yarn provisional cast-on and knit in the round. The provisional stitches are then placed on a spare circular needle and worked together with the active stitches to create a lovely picot edging.

Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up, then stitches are picked up to create the thumb. Live stitches from the top of the hand and thumb are sewn to the inside of the glove to create picot edgings.
When sewing live stitches to the inside of the glove, work similarly to Kitchener Stitch to keep the edge stretchy.
I like to use this provisional cast on by Purl Soho.

What part of the hand should be measured to get the circumference? Is it around the knuckles or around where the thumb connects to the hand? These are beautiful and would be perfect for me to wear at work while on the computer!
Stephany Mayo
Hey Rachel,
You should measure around your knuckles at the top of your palm. I hope you love knitting your mitts!
