Notes
Elizabeth stitches are short, fat little stitches. For best results it’s easier to go up a hook size when making your chain to accommodate.
You can make your hood and cowl larger or smaller simply by increasing or decreasing your starting chains by increments of 10.
When a row ends with ‘fasten off,’ you will NOT be turning. You will attach yarn to the beginning when starting the next row to ensure both rows of the tulips are made with the RS facing.
Making the Cowl
Row 1: Chain 52.
Row 2: ES in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch2, turn; 50 sts
Row 3: (RS) ES in 1st st. ch2 (for buttonhole), sk2 sts, ES. Switch to LC. *sk1 st, VS. Repeat from * until there are 4 sts rem. Switch back to MC. Sk 1 st, ES in the last 3 sts. Fasten off; 5 ES/21 VS.
Row 4: ES, ES twice in ch2 space, ES. Switch to PC. *PS in VS ch1 space, Ch1. Repeat from * until all VS have a PS. Switch back to MC. ES in last 3 sts; 7 ES/21 PS. Fasten off.
Row 5: ES 4 times. *Drop down and DC in the DC from the previous (leaf) row (see picture), ES in PS. Repeat from * until there are 3 sts remaining. ES 3 times. Ch2, turn. (50)
The pins in this swatch signify where you should put the next row of stitches. The yellow pins are where you drop down to the previous row to put your DC’s. The dark pin at the top of each PS is where you should put your ES.
Row 6: ES, DEC. ES across until there are 3 sts remaining. DEC, ES. Ch2, turn. (48)
Row 7: ES across. Ch2, turn. (48)
Row 8: ES. Ch2, sk 2. ES two times. Change to LC. *sk1 st, VS. Repeat from * until there are 4 sts remaining. Change to MC. ES 4 times. Fasten off. (7 ES/20VS)
Row 9: ES, ES twice in ch2 space, ES. Change to PC. *PS in VS ch1 space, ch1. Repeat from * until all VS have a PS. Switch back to MC. ES in last 4 sts. Fasten off. (8 ES/20 PS)
Row 10: ES 4 times. *Drop down and DC in the DC from the previous (leaf) row, ES in PS. Repeat from * until there are 3 sts remaining. ES in last 3 sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends. (48)
Making the Hood
Row 1: Chain 52.
Row 2: ES in the 3rd chain from the hook and across. Ch2, turn; 50 sts.
Row 3: Change to LC. HDC. *Sk1 st, VS. Repeat from * until 2 sts rem. Sk1, HDC. Fasten off; 2 HDC/24 VS.
Row 4: Change to PC. HDC. Sk1 st. *PS in the ch1 space of the VS, ch1. Repeat from * across until 2 sts rem. Sk1, HDC. Fasten off; 2 HDC/24 PS.
Row 5: Change to MC. HDC. *Drop down and DC between each set of DC in the PS of the previous leaf row, ES in each PS that’s in PC. Repeat from * until there is 1 st rem. HDC. Ch2 turn; 50 sts.
Row 6: ES across. Ch2, turn; 50 sts
Rows 7-24: Repeat Row 6; 50 sts
Row 25: Fold in half with WS out. Starting at the bottom of the back of the hood (The side without the tulips), sl st that side closed to create a bonnet. Fasten off. Weave in end. Turn hood RS out.
Finishing
Step 1: With the RS of the cowl out, count 20 sts from the buttonhole side of the cowl. Attach yarn and SC in that stitch. INC in the next 20 sts. SC once in the next st. (6 unworked sts left in the row) Ch1, turn.
Step 2: With MC, attach hood at the front corner with a sl st. Sl st hood to each SC you just made along the top of the cowl. Once the hood is secure, continue to SC in each st along the top of the cowl. 3 SC in the corner. SC evenly down the side of the cowl. 3 SC in the corner. SC in each st along the bottom of the cowl. 3 SC in the corner. SC evenly up the other side of the cowl. 3 SC in the corner. SC along the top of the cowl until you reach the hood again. Join with a sl st or an invisible join. Fasten off and weave in end.
Step 3: Sew on 2 buttons to correspond with the buttonholes.
About the Designer: Maybe Katie
I believe crocheted clothes can look young and modern.
I believe in dressing children in bright colors. (They can wear neutrals when they’re middle aged)
I believe…
…modifications are from heaven
…stitch counts are from hell
….and people who watch TV without yarn in their hands are just plain weird.

I would love to see an adult sized version of this pattern!
