In soccer & hockey a “hat trick” happens when 1 person scores 3 goals in the same game.
Here is 1 pattern with 3 edgings…plus the option to leave it plain.
The other “trick” is that each side has a different texture – and either can be worn showing.
Size
20” circumference (Hat easily stretches 3”)
8” top of crown to bottom of edging

Pattern Notes
This pattern uses only basic stitches: half double crochet, single crochet, chain stitch and slip stitch.
- Instructions for using both Bulky Weight and Worsted Weight Yarn.
- Includes instructions for the following Edging options:
- Contrasting Brim Edge
- Ribbed Edge
- Rolled Brim Edge
- Plain Edge (beanie style)
- The unique textures result from inserting the hook through different places in the stitches.
- The hat is worked from the top down, in a spiral, giving opportunity to adjust to your preferred fit.

Pattern (bulky Weight)
Unless otherwise indicated, work in Very Back Loop (VBL) of hdc.
Do not join rounds unless instructions indicate to do so.
After making 1st stitch in each round, move marker up to that stitch.
Rnd 1: 8 hdc into a magic ring. Place marker in 1st hdc of rnd. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: [1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] around. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: [1 hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st] around. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: 1 hdc in each st around. (32 sts)
Rnd 6: [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts] around. (40 sts)
Rnd 7: [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts] around. (48 sts)
Rnd 8: 1 hdc in each st around. (48 sts)
Rnd 9: [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 sts] around. (56 sts)
At this point you can adjust the hat to your preferred fit. At my gauge, the crown diameter after round 9 measured 6 ½”, yielding a 20” circumference (inside). Hat will easily stretch another 3” when worn. If you want a hat with a larger circumference, add row(s) here with 1 more hdc in each group of the rnd:
The next round would be [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts] around (64 sts); the following round would be [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts] around (72 sts).
Work even to preferred length: 1 hdc in each st around. Move marker up to 1st st of round each time.
To fit most adults, make the hat 7”-8” from top of crown to bottom edge. It is best to try it on, allowing the stretch to occur, to decide on the final length.
Do not fasten off.
Go to Edging Instructions.

About the Designer: Margo Bauman
Margo Bauman – aka flyingflower on Ravelry – learned to crochet from her Grandmother. While she occasionally spent some time working on crochet projects while growing up, and later in college, she didn’t devote much time to it until the 2000’s. Since then, she has won a considerable number of 1st place ribbons at the St. Mary’s County Fair for her exceptional work. Her beautiful crochet pieces can be seen at the woman’s cooperative called Fuzzy Farmers Market in Leonardtown MD.
Over the past few years, Margo has created a number of original designs. Her very first pattern, Oh, Honey! Tunisian Spa Cloth, was released as a free pattern on Ravelry in March 2015. Later that year it was a Crochet Awards (aka the Flamies) Judges Nominee.
