The Inishere Shawl combines traditional Aran stitches in an easy-to-wear rectangular shape. The center panel features intertwining diamonds, like the patchwork fields of the designer’s Aran home, filled with seed stitch and garter stitch, and a ‘hugs and kisses’ cable running along each side. The seed stitch from the diamond centers is echoed in the shawl border. This shawl highlights the joy of Aran knitting: there is something different to do in each row, yet once you can read your knitting you can put away your pattern thanks to the repetitive nature of each individual element.

Pattern Notes
- The pattern is worked flat, without shaping.
- Stitch markers may be used to mark the edge of the seed stitch borders on either side, but experienced knitters may not find this necessary. You may also find it useful to place stitch markers to designate the beginning and end of the cable charts.
- All cabling takes place on the RS of the work.
- The cable panels (A – Hugs & Kisses Cable and B – Diamond) are of different lengths, but each continues repeating until the end e.g. once you have finished Row 16 of Cable panel A, you return to Row 1 of that panel, even though you are on Row 17 of the Diamond chart.

Repeat Rows [1-2] for remainder of cable section, until Diamond Chart has been worked a total of 18 times. You may continue working more repetitions to make a longer shawl, as long as you leave around a third of a skein (33g) for working the final seed stitch border.
Work Rows 1 and 2 once again (first two rows of Diamond Chart).
Final Border Section
Work in seed stitch for 14 rows.
BO all stitches in pattern.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Wash and block, being careful not to overly stretch the shawl. The purpose of the blocking is to return ease to the cable crosses, not to greatly alter the dimensions of the shawl.
