This shawl is inspired by some of my favorite Estonian lace stitches: the lily of the valley and a variation of ‘Silvia lace,’ adapted from The Haapsalu Shawl by Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi. Combining three colors, garter sections and lace, and strategic increases and decreases, this shawl is a perfect addition to your late winter/early spring wardrobe.

Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked from end to end (sideways), using increases on the ends and decreases in the middle of the rows. All nupps are worked with 7 stitches and purled together on the following row.
The end section of lace and garter uses German short rows for the shaping. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, I highly recommend Asa Tricosa’s tutorial, which you can find here: http://asatricosa.com/german-short-rows/. I recommend using a locking stitch marker to show where your last double stitch is during the lace short rows as it can be really tricky to see them!
The lace charts for Lily of the Valley are written for two pattern repeats. For these, work the first repeat that you see (on the right) on the right side of the shawl, and the second repeat for the left side. There is a stitch in between both of these repeats in the charts: this is the center stitch. On the Silvia Lace chart, the pattern is worked as one repeat across the entire row. The center stitch in the chart corresponds to the center stitch of the shawl. To help you with counting and keeping track of the pattern repeats, I’ve highlighted this center stitch in yellow.

Finishing
