Another STEM Issue!
Every time I sit here to write about a STEM Issue, I’m filled with accomplishment, excitement and just simply, pride.
As always, this year’s designs are:
- part “why didn’t I think of that?”
- part surprise
- part amazement
Since I don’t want to play favorites (it’d be like picking a favorite child), I’ll give them in alphabetical order:
- Leclerc Cowl by Mary E. Rose – At first glance you might think it’s just a basic cowl with a bunch of stripes. But there are lots of special details in there. As Mary said, she challenged herself to see how many ways she could work Pi into it.
- Roure Pullover by crisdvic – You might think that it’s just a basic pullover, but there are lots of special details in it.
- Watson Crick Socks by Theresa Shingler – DNA cables have been worked into knitting patterns for years. But these socks are different from your run of the mill DNA cables.
A New Feature in our Patterns
I’ve often said that if I could just be with each person, to explain why the pattern is special, they wouldn’t miss all of the little details that make it unique.
I don’t know why it took me so long, but I’ve added a new graphic to each pattern. It points out all the special bits, to make sure you don’t miss them.
Since it’s our first time, I’ll show you all three:
First up (in that same alphabetical order), is Leclerc:
Up next, we have Roure:
And finally, Watson Crick:
All three designers deserve a true pat on the back. They embody the things that make for a good STEM Issue design. I call them “design plus” because each has something a little extra.
Don’t Miss the Article on how to Teach Knitting to a STEM learner
Teacher Extraordinaire Elizabeth Okeyele gives us some great pointers on how to connect with today’s students. In her article “Teach STEM-Minded Learners”, she gives us tips on what to say and how to say it in a way that clicks with this generation’s students.
We Also Have
A new set of Stitchopedias (both Knit and Crochet) and 2 more Giveaways:
- A Snag-Free Row Counter by Twice Sheared Sheep
- The book Joyful Colorwork Socks (and read our review first)
Two Gift Guides
No holiday season would be complete without a few gift guides. We have one each for knitting and crochet, but just like the crafts themselves – each guide is identical to the other. In case you’re thinking about the things that make each different – needles or hooks – we explain why they’re not in there.
Send people hints with our URLs, or let them help you create a wish list to give to your loved ones.
Remember This
One of my favorite quotes is by Einstein, and it applies to finding a mistake in your project. So, the next time you need to frog, keep this quote in mind from Einstein “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.“.
Enjoy your failures (almost) as much as your successes. Learn from them, and you can consider them successes too (just in a different way).
